This release does not have a Play Store Description, so we grabbed one from version 0.1.100944346:

Now call any phone number in the world from your Hangouts app without using your cell plan minutes. Most calls to US and Canada are free!

Download and install the Hangouts Dialer to start making phone calls in the Hangouts app. After installation, you can access all voice calling features directly from Hangouts or use Hangouts Dialer as a shortcut to make phone calls from the dialer screen in Hangouts.

● Make phone calls over data from the Hangouts app - call any phone number, including landlines.
● Use Outbound Caller ID - people who you call will see your verified number when you call them (no more appearing as Unknown!)
● Connect with your Google Voice number to make VOIP calls in the Hangouts app from your Google Voice number.

Notes: Mobile carrier and ISP charges may apply for data use. Voice calls to Hangouts users are free, but other phone calls might come with a charge. View our calling rates at http://www.google.com/hangouts/rates.

    Don’t see anything obvious; however…

“reroute outgoing calls” permission was added.

Maybe laying the groundwork to finally replace the Google Voice app to route calls through the native dialer?

Neat, thanks. It was so bizarre the nonupdated, ugly Google Voice app was needed for years after the transition to Hangouts.

      • It seems you still need it. If you don’t have a data connection or WiFi, you can’t make calls.

        • Alex

Yeah, you do now. Hoping this is laying some groundwork.

This may be more related to Project Fi than to the GV transition.

      • Alex

They are pretty much one in the same as far as Hangouts is concerned. I have went back and forth from it twice now. Literally the only things that change in the app is everywhere you see a “Project Fi” label, it turns to a “Google Voice” label.

Project Fi works similarly with direct access numbers. Except for Fi, you have to use the native dialer to get a call over the cell network (or) WiFi. You have to use Hangouts dialer to force a call over data.

They (Voice) have already announced their intention to bring over this functionality to Hangouts. So it’s not unreasonable to think this would benefit both Fi and Voice.

For me after the install I finally got the option to have outgoing Caller ID (as was promised with Hangouts 4.0) (as I am in Germany I cannot use Google Voice for the number)
